Modernization of Paris

  • Napoleon appoints Baron Hausmann to redesign Paris.  The Paris of today was created with its wide avenues, elegant government buildings, rows of apartment housing with the Champs Elysee as the main road.
  • Much of the old part of Paris with narrow streets that was home to the Left was leveled and modernized with wide streets.  The wider streets made barricades far more difficult and lent themselves to effective artillery fire against potential mobs.
  • After the modernization, Paris began to rival Vienna as a potential new City of Light--a title Paris had won by the end of WWI
