Second Reich Timeline

 

  • 1860     Congress of Vienna created the Deutsher Bund, a confederation of 38 states under the president of Austria.

  • 1862     Bismarck says his famous but not elaborate "Blood and Iron" speech.

  • 1863     The government of Copenhagen planned to make Schleswig an integral part of Denmark.
  • 1864     A short war starts, with Prussia and Austria winning over Denmark. It was decided Schleswig was to be under Prussian control, and Holstein under Austrian control.
  • 1866     Seven Weeks war: Prussia wins the war at Koniggratz, and Austria is annexed.
  • 1870     Bismarck encouraged Prince Leopold, a Prussian relative of Wilhelm I, to compete for the throne of Spain.
  • 1870     Bismarck gets hold of the Ems Telegram and edits it to provoke France
  • July 19, 1870     France declares war (Fanco-Prussian War)
  • Jan. 28, 1971 Paris captured. France blamed for starting the war.
  • May 10, 1871 Treaty of Frankfurt signed ending the war
  • Jan. 18, 1871 Wilhelm I proclaimed Emperor of Germany, starting the Second Reich. Bismarck appointed Chancellor.
  • 1871-1875 German industry grew enormously, and became one of the largest I the world.
  • 1873 Three Emperor’s League formed (failed due to conflicting interests over the Balkans)
  • 1879 Bismarck established a military and political alliance with Austria-Hungary.
  • 1882 Italy joined the alliance and the Triple Alliance was formed.
  • 1888-1908 German foreign trade increased 250%
  • 1888 Wilhelm I died, Frederick III succeeded him (died 99 days later). Frederick succeeded by Wilhelm II
  • 1890 Wilhelm II forced Bismarck to resign
  • 1894 Wilhelm II’s aggressiveness frightened other European powers so Russia allied with France.
  • 1904 Britain felt its control over the seas threatened so the Entente Cordial was formed with France
  • 1914 World War I starts
  • 1918 German workers and troops revolted in protest to the continuing of the war
  • Nov. 9, 1918 The new Weimar Republic is declared, and Wilhelm II was forced to flee to the Netherlands.
  • Nov. 11, 1918 Right after Germany is declared a republic, the Armistice ending World War I was signed
